Stepping into the stone-clad lobby of C-Hotel&Spa, around 20km from the shores of Lake Como, you know you’re in for a sensory experience. First you’ll be hit by the warm, chocolaty smell of freshly ground coffee beans, which lures you deeper into the building. Then, you’ll notice the stretched teak reception desk, which isn’t at the front of the hotel at all, but sandwiched between a bustling Italian bar and a family-run confectionary shop that’s been baking mouthwatering delicacies on this site for more than 30 years. Although the shop’s now been completely rebuilt as a minimalist enoteca, complete with a wine cellar that fuels legendary tasting sessions, the locals still love it.
But Andrea Colzani, the 29-year-old entrepreneur who built C-Hotel&Spa around his family’s existing businesses, hasn’t relied on former glories. Instead, he’s used his self-taught architectural skills to create a forward-thinking minimalist retreat in the hills. By cleverly threading locally quarried limestone through the naturally lit hallways of the glass-fronted building, he’s created a blank canvas for artists to decorate during the exhibitions that are often held here. And as if to make the building immune from the effects of time, all 18 of the suites have been stripped back to a functional minimum. Soundproofed, climate-controlled and with great swathes of natural materials, the effect is extraordinarily soothing.
C-Hotel&Spa is a sense-tingling minimalist refuge near the palaces and villas of mountain-wrapped Lake Como. Operated by a family of local entrepreneurs and styled with rare local materials, it’s a timeless place to enjoy nature’s tranquility.
