Alexandra Efstathiadou spent nine years transforming Ekies All Senses Resort – a hotel she used to visit with her parents as a child – into an environmentally-friendly property that presents Greek culture in a fresh light. Throughout the renovation process, various Greek architects and firms took part. The result was three unique ‘houses’, where tradition co-exists with pared-back design, playful pops of color and custom-designed illustrations. Efstathiadou’s husband Vangelis Liakos is the co-founder and art-director of award-winning design agency Beetroot, who played a big part in creating the visual identity of the renovated resort. On an unspoiled semi-private beach on Sithonia, the area attracts visitors with its small rocky islands, clean waters and pine tree forests. Designed to blend harmoniously with this landscape, eco-friendly materials were used throughout from the non-toxic paints to the ecological Coco-mat mattresses and minimal waste philosophy.
Each of the 64 rooms and suites has a pool, sea or garden view, and each is unique in terms of color and decorations. Elements of Greek tradition are woven into the concept through playful illustrations and typography depicting Greek poet Aesop’s fables on the bedroom walls. These elements are blended with the best in contemporary design pieces by Philippe Starck and Achille Castiglioni. Although the surroundings are lavish, there is nothing excessive in the décor and a laid-back atmosphere is achieved. Natural, unrefined materials such as solid wood and Greek grey marble combine with an interior color concept that mirrors the rural landscape. Relaxation and comfort are top priority with elements such as huge cuddly sofas, hammocks and loungers inviting guests to take off their watch and completely lose track of time.
Local products and recipes play an important role in the food and beverage concept which also has no time restrictions, allowing guests to eat anywhere, anytime. Throughout the property guests can enjoy traditional Greek food presented with charm and imagination. The main restaurant, Kouzina, serves Greek and traditional dishes; Koutali serves grilled dishes with Mediterranean flavours; Kanata Beach Bar and Organic pool bar offers juices and cocktails; or for something special visit the Treehouse - a small gourmet restaurant serving dishes from the chef’s personal recipes.
Total relaxation wouldn’t be complete without the Ekies Spa, which offers a variety of alternative therapies using Greece’s leading all-natural range of Apivita products. The indoor-outdoor concept allows guests to have their treatments in ‘Spa cabanas’, surrounded by natural light, fresh air and the sounds of nature. For further relaxation, guests only have to look to the natural surroundings, where the azure, tepid waters and rugged coastline provide hours of swimming, canoeing, excursions to the outer islands or simply walking barefoot in the sand.
