HOT DEALS AND NEW HOTELS
High above the glittering jewelry stores and sweet-smelling chocolate boutiques of Kolonaki, the Greek capital’s most opulent shopping district, a periscope keeps watch. Not over individual streets, like the CCTV cameras you’ll see bolted to the city’s steel lampposts, but over the entire Athenian skyline. Controlling its movements, several stories below, are guests at the aptly named Periscope – an intimate urban hub created by industrialist and contemporary art connoisseur Dakis Joannou. Here, surveying the city and its people is just part of the guest experience.
In the hotel’s public areas, which are delineated by chunky concrete supports, interactive art installations urge you to question your pre-conceived ideas about surveillance. On the main staircase trunk, a kind of primitive altimeter tracks your journey to bed, showing you how high you are above sea level with every step.
All 21 bedrooms and suites are a study in pared-down style adding warmth to the functional décor. But catch your first view of the real Athens, crowned by the classical pillars of the Parthenon, and you might just be tempted to head out for a day of inner-city exploration
With boldly simplistic rooms, powerful interactive art installations and invigorating views over the ancient city of Athens, the Periscope is an up market space for thought and reflection.
