Artwork by Thea Djordjadze in the lobby, Weishäupl outdoor furniture on the terrace, and Jacob Jensen phones in the guestrooms – these are just a few of the big statements and little details that make the Louis Hotel a tour de force of hotel design. Housed in an 100-year-old building revamped by local architects Hild and K, the Louis combines the modern with the traditional, the local with the international, and the comfortable with the luxurious. The facade itself is a bold statement: from first floor to fifth, oversize letters emblazoned proudly across the building exterior spell out “Louis Hotel,” unabashedly announcing the arrival of this important new player on the German design hotel stage. Unusual and eye-catching, this powerful facade is a harbinger of the exciting design that waits inside. Hild and K’s interiors do not disappoint. Guestrooms feature custom-made furniture that is at once elegant and surprising, ranging from closets based on a suitcase design to Gentleman’s Bars filled with custom-bottled spirits. Bronze door handles compliment walnut bed frames, local timbers offset regional natural stones, and standing and wall lamps by Munich design lab Winhart shed a warm light on oiled oak floors, handmade desks, and Italian fabric fittings. Mattresses by Sembella are made of natural rubber, bed sheets by Frette are 100% Egyptian cotton, and linen Rubelli curtains hang from French windows that lead, in some rooms, onto small balconies overlooking the city. French-style bathrooms feature fittings by Stella, heated floors of Kirchheim limestone, and tiling inspired by the Parisian metro.
