Seasoned hotelier Kai Hollmann makes turning Hamburg’s 19th century municipal gasworks (“Gaswerk”) into Europe’s first loft style hotel look as easy as dropping a “t” into its name, instantly transforming the complex into a “guest works.”

Seeing as the redbrick shell and even a monstrous green industrial machine from the building’s bygone days as a power-station are both under a strict preservation order, a sensitive conversion was required of Hamburg architect Klaus Peter Lange. Rising to the occasion, he thus simply integrated the green monstrosity into the design of the 600 square meter atrium lobby, in which a bridge leading to the guestrooms is suspended overhead. Natural light floods the atrium and gold leaf adorns the front desk, above which an old tower clock has stopped telling time. Sheer curtains on either side point the way to the bar and restaurant or to the ten conference rooms, which also cater to grateful local professionals.

Pure functionality is still expressed by exposed pipes and naked brick walls, but interior designers Regine Schwethelm and Sybille von Heyden found that the brick actually provided a warm backdrop. They set about contrasting the building’s rough edges with soothing textures, slick and simple MDF furniture, oversized armchairs and touches of Asia – an imported style prevalent in this seafaring city. The “old” rooms feature original brick walls and arched multipane windows that can be darkened with sliding panels of felt. Finest walnut wood trimmings, tall casement windows and unmasked concrete walls, garnish „new“ business lofts and penthouse suites. Rotating, propeller-headed ceiling fans pay homage to the many mechanical devices once whirring away in the power-station.
