When you step into Hotel zum Löwen, a timber-framed building in the heart of medieval Duderstadt, it feels like you’re entering a close friend’s home. Throughout the renovation of this historic and beloved hotel personal touches from the local hero owner have been left throughout – handpicked original artwork from Andy Warhol hanging on the walls, a connoisseurs´ favorite types of wine being sipped beneath chandeliers in Chez Otto, one of two restaurants, a collection of eclectic souvenirs from world travels thoughtfully placed throughout the rooms. As you stroll through the building, with interior designer Anja Müller’s purple-brown interiors conjuring up a sense of drama, you’ll see how the best elements of a traditional German guesthouse have been retained, and then reinvigorated with modern design and comfort.

For starters, the well-known hotel has its own resort-quality spa, complete with a steam room, pool, salt sauna and fitness equipment by Milon. The newly renovated 17th Century building also has three meeting rooms, a daylight- drenched winter garden, vaulted wine cellars (including tasting rooms), and from mid 2013 an in-house microbrewery that’s overseen by an acclaimed local Braumeister. The largest of the 53 rooms and suites have balconies, and from here you can see Duderstadt’s red rooftops and black spires stretching off into the distance. Kunsthalle HGN, the gallery housing the owner’s contemporary art collection, is also close by – making this place perfect for a restful getaway.

LOCATION OF HOTEL ZUM LÖWEN

Duderstadt is a city in southern Lower Saxony, Germany, in the district of Göttingen. Located on the German Timber-Frame Road, the earliest documentary mention of Duderstadt was in 929 AD. Its historical timber-frame buildings characterize the medieval townscape.

Hotel zum Löwen is situated directly within the historic city wall in the heart of Duderstadt steps from the historic “Westerturm”, one of the city’s eight gate towers.
