HOT DEALS AND NEW HOTELS
A thick buzz of crickets and cicadas, of wood crackling in the heat, and of bushes bristling - this is the sound of Provence. Rows of fragrant lavender and fields of gnarled olive trees set this landscape apart, as does the occasional stone town wedged into the side of a steep hill. A morning farmer’s market full of fresh herbs, dried fruits, and cheeses is in an indispensable part of the experience here, along with an evening glass of a young rosé. But at Domaine des Andéols, located just one hour from Avignon, clean lines, bold geometric spaces, and an evocative art collection reframe Provence.
Domaine des Andéols’ owners, Olivier and Patricia Massart, spent the last 20 years collecting paintings, photographs, furniture, and objects. Seeing no point in keeping the collection private, they set out to create a place where they could share it with artists and designers, their circle of friends, and guests from around the world. Today, Domaine des Andéols is home to more than 250 pieces from the Massarts’ personal collection, and each of its ten villas is inspired by an artwork, color, or theme. Outside, flat concrete surfaces, the sharp horizon of a turquoise pool, and sculptures that play with scale continually push the eye to see the landscape from a fresh perspective.
Just as the art, interior architecture, and design cast the surrounding area in a slightly different light, so too does the exquisite cuisine of its restaurant, “La Maison des Saveurs.” A Provencal garden of apricots, plums, figs, and cherries; seven types of mint; and more than fifty varieties of tomatoes plays muse to the kitchen. Lamb from the Luberon, herbs from the Garrigue, and Domaine des Andéols’ own olive oil are part of the palate here, where Provence anew comes to life in the restaurant’s modern compositions.
The iconic lavender hills, old olive trees, and stone farmhouses of Provence come into fresh focus against the clean lines, bold geometric spaces, and evocative art collection of Domaine des Andéols.
