Architecture & Interior Design: Philipe Maidenberg
The quartier Saint-German-des-Prés slowly grew nearby the ancient Abbey around the Twelfth Century. The original church had been founded in the Fifith Cetury by the Merovingians, but later destroyed and rebuilt around the year 1000. Today, it is perfectly integrated to the Hausmanian architecture of Paris, and it is the heart of the quartier.
Moreover, the quartier has been a center of attraction for every kind of intellectuals since the Eighteenth Century. Its ancient history and lively cultural life are perfectly reflected in the Hotel BEL-AMI, located in the heart of this neighborhood.
From 1995, architect and designer Philipe Maidenberg decided to dedicate his work to hotel architecture. The design and requirements of a hotel are very specific and complex, and therefore require a broad knowledge of the field. Maidenberg has designed and renovated a wide range of hotel rooms, suites, and whole buildings around the world; and of course, the outcome of the Hotel BEL-AMI is not less brilliant.
The Hotel BEL-AMI is located in a renovated 19th century building, where the first copy of Guy de Maupassant’s novel Bel Ami was printed. Inspired by its literary background, Philippe Maidenberg conceived the newly refurnished bedrooms as elegant and minimal environments in which one can easily settle, with a desk and bookshelves to read and write, or to use as dresser if necessary. Luxury fabrics, pastel and bright colours complete the ensemble for an elegant, comfortable, yet cutting-edge atmosphere. All furniture colour is natural grey, the green and blue in the rest of the furnishing allude to the Parisian evening colours, with the exception of a warm touch in a low chair in golden leather. The bathrooms, conceived as luxury huts, are decorated in natural wood tones.
The BEL-AMI Café ambiance is the perfect place to enjoy a plentiful brunch: radiant colours, and the natural light entering from a bay window, a collection of art books and video-screenings showing Parisian life. Maidenberg has also created a massive illuminated suspension with a famous quote from Guy de Maupassant, which completes the poetic environment. The other sophisticated spot for socializing during the day, or in the evening after a long walk around Paris, is the BEL-AMI Bar. Bathed by daylight during the day, and illuminated by specially designed lightening during the evening, is the most welcoming place to finish the day with a relaxed chat.
