Architect & Interior Designer: Philippe Lucazeau
Housed in a building that dates back to 1656, La Monnaie Art & Spa Hotel’s interior combines history with contemporary furniture, decor and modern art. The pieces on display include paintings, photographs and sculptures from the owners Sylvette and Pascal Lebeau’s collection. Exhibitions change regularly, in conjunction with Galerie Albane, but one can expect to find works by artists such as Hélène Jousse, Nicolas Benedetti and Liz Bono.
Architect and interior designer Philippe Lucazeau has managed to maintain the atmosphere of the ancient 17th century house, while lightening the tone with a spirited and daring aesthetic. The 36 rooms and suites offer either street, patio or garden views and all feature effortless layouts, with smooth whites, soft greys and feature walls in moody charcoal or patterned wallpapers. Luxurious amenities and decadent furnishings complement the interior style.
The bar and library are all together serene and thought-provoking where guests can unwind and be inspired. Throughout the public spaces, the historic stone walls, painted white, are contrasted by lively features, such as walls splashed in sky blue and grassy green, and low turquoise suede chairs. These are set alongside more classic elements, such as black leather chairs, glass chandeliers and an open roaring fireplace, surrounded by bold black and white striped wallpaper.
The futuristic and intimate “happy few Spa”, lowly-lit with subdued purples and blues, features state-of-the-art treatments and equipment, such as color therapy showers and water massage beds. The Spa can be booked exclusively for up to four people.
The hotel offers a free shuttle service to La Rochelle’s main convention centers, which are all close by. Should guests choose to do business on-site, however, they can do so in the hotel’s very own meeting room, with space to hold up to 40 people, free internet access and the latest technology. La Monnaie Art & Spa Hotel is the first property in this historic town to offer this much choice to the business and leisure traveller.
