Napoleon Bonaparte's birth house, located in the island’s capital Ajaccio, is preserved as a museum; the city also has a fine art museum, the Fesch museum, and a citadel. Bastia, the former capital and the principal port of the island, is a busy commercial centre and has a fine church, St. Charles. The smaller Porto Vecchio on the Southern part of Corsica has beautiful beaches; it is also a good starting point for excursions into the inland regions.
