Given its location in the heart of Copenhagen, Hotel Skt. Petri stands as a fine example of the very best in minimalist Scandinavian design – with a warm welcoming glow and a refreshing humorous edge.
Casually gliding up to the light-filled lobby on the escalator is the first of many delightfully quirky experiences created by local architect Erik Møllers Tegnestue at the Skt. Petri – being a renovated former department store designed by Vilhelm Lauritsen dating back to the 30s. The mezzanine reception area is filled with clean lines and characteristic curves of functionalism, and glamorous large rings of light hanging above seem to crown the space. Changing art and design exhibitions add to the cosmopolitan flair of the lobby.
The adjoining Brasserie Bleu is, next to the Bar Rouge, another socialising hub. It playfully acts on this by featuring mirrors carefully placed around the high-backed dividing seating blocks that tantalisingly encourage stealing glances from unsuspecting guests at other tables.
Erik Møllers Tegnestue collaborated with one of Denmark’s leading artists, Per Arnoldi, on the colour concept – who selected a tricolour scheme for the public spaces of Hotel Skt. Petri: Bright whites contrasting with his signature cool blues and vivid reds adorn this hotel's interiors down to every last accessory.
In fact, the 268-room design hotel is everything that top-notch modern Scandinavian design has to offer: modern urban living comfort featuring pared down style and a magnificent to-the-point functionality. Custom-made dark wood furnishings and textiles in elegant earthy tones of grey and brown are set off against the white washed walls hung with a careful selection of artworks by Arnoldi, who also designed the large headboards. Cosy armchairs, standing lamps with light-coloured shades by Moooi and snug wool throws all go towards creating real comfort zones. |
