The coalmines of Genk have since closed down, but some of the old structures and buildings can still be visited, among them the Winterslag mine building. Nearby is the open-air museum Bkrijk, which has reconstructed 19th century buildings from the Flanders region, a fine Arboretum and live shows with actors.
