Genk, located in the Belgium province of Limburg, became a centre of industrial development after large amounts of coal were detected nearby.

The coalmines have since closed down, but some of the old structures and buildings can still be visited, among them the Winterslag mine building. Nearby is the open-air museum Bkrijk, which has reconstructed 19th century buildings from the Flanders region, a fine Arboretum and live shows with actors.
