Once a mining centre, Phuket is today mainly famous for its natural beauty and its tourist appeal. The city of Patong has the most developed beaches; the island’s southernmost point, Laem Phrompthep, offers picture-perfect views during sunset. There is good diving along the various small coral islands offshore, and some of the tourist resorts are fine examples of post-modern tropical architecture.
