The Southeast Asian island nation and city-state of Singapore was once a British crown colony and gained its independence in 1959.
MORE
There are a number of colonial buildings and examples for many different styles of architecture, but the city’s dominating style is modern, especially in the business district. Landmark structures include the Esplanade theatres (2002), a performing arts centre resembling the eyes of a fly, the postmodernistic skyscrapers at Raffles Place, and the historic and colourful Sri Mariamman Temple, founded in 1827. The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) operates a city gallery.
