ARCHITECTURE / INTERIOR DESIGN

Frederic Thomas
Dé-SIGNE Paris, France

In a triangular skyscraper, French interior designer Frederic Thomas has created a sleek hotel concept that connects with the lively milieu of the surrounding business district in downtown Tokyo without succumbing to its fast pace.

The Park Hotel Tokyo features 273 guestrooms spanning across the top ten floors of the Shiodome Media Tower in downtown Tokyo. A home to international media organisations and television companies, the tower also offers an oasis of elegant living. Its highlight is the atrium that begins with the hotel on the building’s 25th floor and soars all the way up to the 34th. Trees and plants placed on the obsidian and teak lobby floor reflect the Japanese cultural tradition of living in harmony with nature. This soothing haven of trees and greenery, showered in sunlight pouring through the glazed roof, is spun into the atrium as well, which is the tranquil backbone of Thomas’ concept.

All the guestrooms face the outside and Thomas’ interior design concept is founded on specially selected off-white furniture, sensuously curvaceous forms and soft fabric covered walls – which creates a softening cushion to cleverly juxtapose the stark backdrop of Tokyo’s newer business and cultural centres outside. One of two low-level exits conveniently leads straight to the Waterfront Transit Station, giving guests a quick and easy to explore the many other facets of fascinating Tokyo.
