Tokyo, once a small fishing village called Edo, has been the capital of Japan since 1868.
MORE
The city is a byword for futuristic design and modernity, but also has a number of historic buildings, such as the Imperial Palace and the Taito temple. The Edo-Tokyo Museum exhibits a miniature replica of Old Tokyo (and also some life-sized buildings). The Bridgestone Museum of Art has Japanese and European art from the 19th and 20th century. At night the city becomes a sea of light; which can be impressively viewed from the Tokyo Sky Deck on the 52nd floor of Roppongi Hills’ Mori Tower.
