ARCHITECTURE / INTERIOR DESIGN
Denton Corker Marshall Group Jakarta
The hotel in the middle of Jakarta’s central business district stays true to its name, a Sanskrit word meaning “surprise”.
Standing as a welcome getaway from the energy of the streets around it, the Alila Jakarta goes for an elegant pared-down look throughout its 27 floors devoid of any unnecessary ornamentation or excess. Local architecture firm Denton Cork Marshall chose a minimal feel in their design that offers guests a sanctuary from the outside world. Steel and local stone, such as Indonesian granite, provide the lobby with a gentle grace that is illuminated by large windows overlooking the garden in the inner courtyard. Chief designer Budiman Hendropurnomo opted to avoid excessive detailing in the lobby, thereby outfitting it with clear-lined geometric furnishings.
An Asian flair is brought to the 245 rooms that are decorated in a lush palette of dark red tones. Cool heavy cotton is the favoured choice for textiles, contrasting well with the extensive use of local Nyatoh and dark merbau timbers. Offering a pure and abstract design experience, the Alila Jakarta is an exclusive and surprisingly isolated place to replenish one’s own energy reserves.
