Architecture & Design: Yoka Sara & Nobuyuki Narabayashi

First envisaged by local architect Yoka Sara, whose designs capture the spiritual energy of their surroundings, these single-story sanctuaries are rounded and open-plan, making the most of natural daylight and warm island breezes. Each villa has its own turquoise pool and an airy alfresco dining area that’s covered by a curved stone canopy. Part of the overarching design concept was to blur the lines between inside and out, allowing guests to enjoy the entire environment come rain or shine. This organic, outdoor feel is helped by the abundance of fragrant tropical plants, which add harmonious flashes of pink, green and red to the carefully landscaped gardens.

From planning the hotel to taking care of its guests, protecting the environment has been Ronny’s central consideration. The main reception building, for example, is made entirely from renewable bamboo. Local Indonesian stone has been used to finish internal walls around the hotel. And LED lighting has been installed throughout to help reduce energy consumption. Even the Balinese artwork adorning the bedrooms is made from recycled teakwood.

A harp-like bamboo staircase twists gradually up towards the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant, MANGOlia, where guests come to sample organic tapas and crumbly Balinese pastries. From the comfort of custom-designed, Muji-style furniture, diners can drink in views of the villas and their gardens, along with the hotel’s reflective pond.

Although the villas are different sizes (and can be linked together to create larger, more sociable spaces), their interiors follow the same understated theme. Earthy slabs of volcanic stone, granite and pale terrazzo make the living spaces cool and inviting, while integrated kitchens equipped with gleaming appliances give guests the flexibility to enjoy private, home-cooked meals. In the bedrooms, which were styled by Japanese design guru Nobuyuki Narabayashi (formerly a creative director at Super Potato), lamps inspired by mango trees light up local objects d’art. Underfoot, warm teakwood floors lead to the ensuite bathrooms, where guests can re-energize under a monsoon shower, or soak peacefully in an infinity-edge bathtub.

The design of Touched spa uses the sacred geometry of old energy symbols to support the healing energies of the treatments. All the major buildings are crafted from bamboo; the mosaic tiles in the salt water swimming pool depict the flower of life symbol, and the opening above the main pavilion features the Hindu Shatkona, or six-pointed star, in the chakra colours, representing energy and fire.
