Located on a hillside in Bali’s picturesque Ayung River Valley and featuring one of the world’s greatest infinity pools, staying at the Alila Ubud is an easy choice to make for anyone. But it’s the hotel’s architectural details, seamlessly mixing natural and modern elements, that literally makes up your mind for you.
Straw roofs skirt smooth plaster walls, terracotta tiles blend into gravel and crushed rock, clearly delineating where the modern world ends, and traditional Balinese building begins. For ultimate exclusivity, the experienced team from Kerry Hill Architects developed eight Balinese villas, perched on stilts featuring spacious wooden decks or with large ponds and private gardens. Then there is, of course, the pool: spreading out to form a severely elongated rectangle until it seems to disappear down the terraced jungle hillside. Though secluded, Ubud is by no means a total secret. In 2004, the hotel won gold in Indonesia’s coveted THK Award, which honours efforts to meet the high standards of eco-friendly tourism.
The guestrooms are housed in eight double-storey blocks dotting the landscape in a manner akin to the setting of a Balinese village, complete with a village centre from which mini piazzas blossom out. Individual garden terraces and balconies offer sweeping views of the surrounding Ayung River Valley. The beds, always the centrepiece of the rooms, are made of lightwood and covered in subtle colours in order to draw attention to the astounding views outside as opposed to being distracted by a myriad of colourful impressions inside. |
