The perfect example of an eclectic mix, The Park Kolkata has got it all – quite naturally blending the beat of stylistic footprints left throughout its history with an artistic contemporary heart.
Built 38 years ago, the flagship of the Park Hotel Group offers up a truly eclectic blend of styles and interiors, each part of a renovation done by a different team of architects over time. In 2000, architects Prakash Mankar & Associates, Made Wijaya and Carl Ettensperger gave the hotel its current contemporary spice. The concept weaves in past and present traditions of the Bengal region, in which the hotel is at home. Elegant modern-colonial spaces blend seamlessly with polished, modern highlights of marble and light wood. Bengali features, such as the embroidery panels, called Kantha, are a distinctive feature throughout the hotel and its 149 guestrooms. The embroidery panels repeat their perpendicular pattern on bedspreads, bed frames and even find their expression in the polished marble floors.
Celebrating the rich art history of the region and taking the hotel into its undoubtedly colourful future, the design team has managed to turn the public spaces into something of a fashionable downtown art gallery. Objets d’art by well-known Indian artists including M.F. Husain, Yusuf Arakkal and Bikash Bhattacharya adorn the walls of the Kolkata. Happily sharing the space with bronze and brass sculptures, terracotta and murals created by local artists, ensuring Bengali tradition and its continuously evolving up-to-date expression remain just two of the Park’s most endearing features.
