The Park Hotels, the frontrunners that brought the concept of the boutique hotel to India, has brought their innovative concept to Hyderabad. In a city that has come, for many Indians, to be seen as a symbol of lavishness and wealth (it is the subcontinent’s leading producer of precious stones and gems), thoughtful design has naturally become a priority. The Park Hotels has remained committed to nurturing the arts and retaining local culture. The group conducts itself and its hotel construction with a rare social and environmental consciousness. The Park Hyderabad has therefore been erected in such a way as to easily become LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified and a card-carrying green building. Some of the requirements for this certification include a charging point for electrically powered vehicles, bicycle parking areas, roofing with high Solar Reflectance Index, exclusively non-smoking guestrooms and restaurants with allocated smoking area (the first in India to enforce a stricter non-smoking policy), and the list continues.
The Park Hyderabad is as powerful an aesthetic force as it is an ecological. Its façade was made to echo the jewellery settings and metalwork predominantly found in the Nizam’s jewellery collection, one of the most valuable in the world. Computer generated imagery and reckoning was employed to optimise the balance between opaque and transparent coverage. Apertures were adjusted to maximize natural daylight and the aluminium composite used produces a dappled shading effect.
The hotel is composed of exquisitely designed guestrooms of varying sizes, executive and presidential suites, restaurants and lounges, entertainment spaces and banquet halls, and finally, ground floor retail facilities and art galleries. The unique construction is focused in onto The Veranda, the heart of the building, which is a flexible, outdoor space that extends the lobby and restaurant as well as providing access to the private dining area and the pool. No ordinary watering hole, this 3-dimensional horizon pool fills the hotel with light and rippling reflections, filling even the Night Club with the serenity of its motion. So that guests can submerge themselves entirely into the experience, access to the Night Club from The Veranda is possible through a cylindrical stairwell that dissects the volume of the pool. And in the afternoon, guests are invited to lounge on The Veranda by the pool’s edge and take their tea while enjoying the cool breeze, the colour and the light that echo the region’s long traditions of leisure and luxury.
