The Indian city of Chennai, or Madras as it was called before 1996, is a lively, modern city with beautiful beaches, historic temples and colonial landmarks.

It is home to the Kalakshetra academy, a centre dedicated to the preservation of traditional values in the Indian Arts, and especially in Indian dance. It is also home to the Tamil-language film industry, Kollywood, named after the district of Kodambakkum, which has many film studios. The Fort St. George Museum exhibits relics of the British Raj.
