Celebrated as the first “urban resort” in the heart of Shanghai, and recently awarded the Best Hotel Design by Trends Magazine, The PuLi Hotel and Spa is a delightful and elegant homage to Chinese traditions of aesthetics and hospitality merged with the finest in contemporary luxury. This juxtaposition is immediately apparent as it is part of Urban Resort Concepts’, the hotel brand behind The PuLi, core priorities. Upon entering the hotel lobby, guests will tread on its century-tile flooring, which was created exclusively for The PuLi. This initial nod towards old world Shanghai continues in the cast bronze basins and the dragon-scaled screens in the guestrooms. But its infiltration is complete – every chair, light fixture and table is inspired by local traditions of craftsmanship, but not exclusively. The team of designers behind The PuLi have managed to transform millennia worth of Chinese design into its most elegant 21st century form.
Each of the 209 guestrooms and 20 suites on 26 floors is drizzled with carefully selected items of historical importance. One such piece is a brass incense burner with open-work that features a stylised “shou” promoting longevity that was often used by scholars to encourage the flow of creative energy. In the washrooms of many guestrooms and suites, guests may encounter a stoneware headrest styled after Song dynasty Cizhou wares. This heavily ornamented headrest is designed to cradle the curvature of the neck and was appreciated for its cooling effect and ability to let air circulate freely around it.
Throughout the hotel a subdued palette consisting of varying shades of brown, white and cream is employed and highlighted by such beautiful sparks of colour as found in the green mosaic tiles of the 3rd floor lap infinity pool. An exotic and serene sanctuary, the peaceful infinity pool is lined by a series of comfortable lounge chairs in dark wood and cream on one side and floor to ceiling windows on the other. From the pool, guests can meander into other sections of the health club, which is as well host to a state of the art gymnasium, a sauna, steam rooms and Jacuzzi pools.
The PuLi’s epicurean haven, the “Jing’An” restaurant remains consistent with the hotel’s palette and subtle elements of Asian influence. It is decorated with low, heavy rattan-inspired tables, some cosy and ovular stools, simple yet prevalent hanging light fixtures, as well as a concentration of those beautiful historical relics found throughout the hotel. The hotel’s 32-metre “Long Bar” has become one of Shanghai’s hottest new nightlife destinations.
