The town and district of Paro are among the most visited places in Bhutan. Paro is home to the Paro Dzong, the mother of all Bhutan fortresses.
Tourist access is restricted, as the Dzong today houses government offices and a monastic school, but getting a close-up peek at the architecture of this fortress is worth the visit. The former watchtower of the fortress, a fascinating cylindrical building, today houses the National Museum of Bhutan. Nearby Taktshang is one of the most famous monasteries of Bhutan. The "Tiger's Nest" hangs 700 meters above the bottom of the Paro valley.
