HOT DEALS AND NEW HOTELS
With one-of-a-kind furnishings, paintings and sculptures created by Julian Schnabel, the Gramercy Park Hotel is more than a unique luxury property -- it’s a work of art. Set in one of the most coveted areas of Manhattan and bordering on New York City's only private park, the legendary hotel has, for almost nine decades, opened its doors to the world’s most creative spirits.
It’s here, night after night, that international artists, literati, fashion designers and intellectuals play out their brilliant human narratives against a stunning backdrop. And that is exactly what Schnabel and German-born real estate developer and art collector Aby Rosen have envisioned. With a lushly landscaped rooftop garden, al fresco dining and engagingly designed interior spaces, the hotel offers many evocative places in which to lounge. Danny Meyer’s Maialino serves Roman-style trattoria dishes; while Gramercy Terrace, a private roof club and landscaped garden, is suitable for casual dining, from breakfast and lunch to weekend brunches. Located on the lobby level, Rose Bar and Jade Bar – two eclectically decorated and candlelit spaces – both have a long list of classic and exotic cocktails, as well as all-day bar dining menus. For those who want to retreat to their quarters, in-room massages and spa services can easily be arranged.
Since it was first built in 1925, the 185-room hotel has certainly lived its share of life. Humphrey Bogart married his first of four wives here. As a young boy, John F. Kennedy resided on the second floor with his family for several months before a move to London. Axel Rose played at the Rose Bar, a venue where an ever-evolving series of events, planned and spontaneous, erupt into being. Vera Wang photographed a recent ad campaign in one of the guest suites, richly layered with velvet curtains, leather wing chairs and carved stone mantels. And the original artwork of Damien Hirst, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol has hung coolly on the boldly painted walls.
In guest rooms, hotel staff leaves thoughtfully chosen books in a bedside stack and Red Flower bath salts for a fragrant dip. The property’s seven specialty suites are each unique, with spacious living rooms, some with dining rooms, and bathrooms with custom sculpted soaking tubs. Outside the hotel is yet another work of art – Gramercy Park, New York City’s only private park, to which guests of the hotel have exclusive access.
Never merely a place to rest one’s head or to fade into the familiar, the Gramercy Park Hotel is a masterpiece of eccentricity and individualism – a place where magical, inspiring things happen.
