ARCHITECTURE / INTERIOR DESIGN

Kit Kemp

The rapid and impressive success of Tim and Kit Kemp’s Firmdale Hotels can be in large part attributed to a single factor: Kit Kemp’s inborn eye for design. Jumbling genres, combining eras and mixing antique pieces with state-of-the-art technology, the self-taught designer follows no rules but her own. Colourful and eclectic, her signature style strikes the perfect balance between classicism and modernity, elegance and comfort. Each and every one of her spaces is memorable, and no two of her rooms look the same. The inspiration for this outpouring of creativity comes from original art, predominantly by little-known British and Irish artists. Unusual pieces tend to be the starting point for a new hotel’s scheme, and sculptures and paintings feature heavily throughout the Firmdale properties. No surprise, then, that the centrepiece of the Crosby Street Hotel lobby is a stunning work by Scottish paper cut-out artist Jack Milroy.

But don’t expect a transatlantic transport of Kemp’s original English style; the Crosby Street Hotel achieves a distinctly American flair without abandoning its British roots. In keeping with the neighbourhood’s industrial history, the hotel facade has been kept minimalist. The exterior of brick, stone and glass pays homage to the surrounding urban landscape, while the floor-to-ceiling warehouse windows are an obvious nod to the iconic SoHo loft look. Furniture, fabrics and finishes are largely American-made, sourced locally from homebred designers like Philadelphia-based artisans Galbraith & Paul, who created many of the hand-block printed fabrics. Bathrooms are executed in granite, oak and glass with heated towel rails and anti-misting mirrors.

The best part of all? Everything is built with sustainable materials and energy-efficient technology – green luxury at its best. In fact, the Crosby Street Hotel is one of the most environmentally responsible hotels in the entire United States, well-poised to receive Gold LEEDS (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification by the US Green Building Council.
