Playa Del Carmen itself has pleasant restaurants and shopping avenues; it was able to retain much of its village charm since the height of buildings has been limited to three storeys early on. To the south there is an archaeological site/ecological park called Xcaret, comprised of lush nature, water attractions and Mayan ruins; the park is the brainchild of architect Miguel Quintana Pali. The nearby island of Cozumel has fine coral reefs and is a popular scuba diving destination.
