A glowing white two-storey structure in the mellow fishing village of Playa del Carmen, the Deseo has become one of the hottest spots on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

Created by Mexican hoteliers Carlos Couturier and Moises Micha, the hotel lives up to that certain cosy charm of the Caribbean coast while creating a level of design sophistication aimed directly at the discerning international connoisseur of style. Built by the young architectural firm Central de Arquitectura, the entire layout creates a strong focal point on the pool and lounge area. Distinct elements with a relaxed Caribbean flavour, such as the comfortable Belize chairs around the poolside are joined by generously sized, inviting day beds made of Chechen wood and casually hung with breezy linen curtains. Horizontal slats of light wood along the arcades surrounding the inner courtyard and pool lend the Deseo a geometric cleanness and reveal their true beauty when the sun sets and the shadows create an inspiring atmosphere for the guests to settle into the mood of a Caribbean night.

Each of the 15 rooms and suites are a literal and emotional cool retreat from the heat with their floors of white marble and natural colour palette designed to soothe both the eye and the mind. The guiding mantra behind Central de Arquitectura’s mission was to create a total comfort zone – to feel cared for and to fully replenish your energy reserves in luxury – without being overbearing. An architectural mission accomplished by the choice of deliciously cool interiors cleverly warmed up by a carefully chosen lighting concept that seems to prolong the glory of the sunset with variable filters in shades of blue, orange and magenta. More traditional style elements like the imposing stone entrance that has been modelled on a Mayan temple or the mangle wood balcony railings manage to earth the design concept with local tastes.
