Centrally located on Playa del Carmen’s buzzing main drag, the Deseo hotel is a visually stunning and fashionably mischievous getaway just a few steps away from the Caribbean coast – the zenith of sophisticated hip on Mexico’s Riviera Maya. Designed to foster interaction among guests, the Deseo has a chic, fuss-free look that provides an ideal backdrop for relaxing by day and socialising by night. The hotel’s architectural and symbolic focal point is an open-air lounge that assumes all the functions of a lobby, restaurant, bar and pool area. Situated on a raised platform on the hotel roof, the lounge features a cocktail and snack bar, self-service kitchen, pool, Jacuzzi and host of oversized daybeds that invite guests to lounge and mingle, day and night. Come sunset, the bar gets into full swing with live DJs spinning house music and Playa del Carmen’s finest coming out to see and be seen.

When the party dwindles, guests can retreat to the hotel’s 15 rooms, all designed with an eye to simplicity and minimalism. Predominately understated and white, these private spaces are endowed with a unique charm thanks to a smattering of playful details: a hammock tucked into a corner, a disappearing slide-away bedside table, a wire clotheslines strung along a bare white wall and hung with unexpected treasures like sun hat, boxer shorts, beach bag and room-service menu. Amenities are purposely kept at a minimum so as not to tempt guests into isolation; there is not a cosy armchair or 20-inch television in sight. All rooms do, however, include a mini bar, wireless Internet and small night kit containing three rather revealing items: incense, earplugs and condoms – a nod, certainly, to the hotel’s suggestive name, Spanish for “desire.” Though probably not ideal for those seeking a quiet beachside hideaway, Deseo is the ideal spot for design-savvy travellers in search of an achingly hip and happening hotel on the Yucatan Peninsula.
