Housed in a magnificent palace, the meticulous renovation of DOWNTOWN Mexico ensured nothing was lost from the original building’s beauty. Grey volcanic walls, handmade cement tiles, a grand patio, and an impressive stone-forge staircase featuring original artwork, have all been left intact – a move that is characteristic of Grupo Habita’s properties. Owners Carlos Couturier and Moisés Micha’s collection of art and design focused hotels each respect the local surroundings where they are situated. “We like working with older spaces that were conceived by someone else,” says Couturier, “To give it a new life but still respect the essence of the landmark, it’s a challenge, and we like that.” The building in which DOWNTOWN Mexico is housed has the unique characteristics of viceregal style – a style of architecture that fused local civilizations with European culture as a result of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. This style typically blends colonial and indigenous cultures, Old and New World, resulting in charming and intriguing architecture.

Each of the 13 Grupo Habita properties exude their own personality and each uses a hand-selected group of architects and designers, who are specially chosen to create an ambience and design aesthetic that blends with the hotel’s location and natural environment. For this hotel, the architecture and interior design were led by CheremSerrano Arquitectos. The firm’s previous projects include several residential and commercial designs throughout Mexico City, such as the award-winning El Japonez restaurant, for which the firm won the National Award for Interior Design.

The 17 rooms and suites possess a stripped-back and raw industrial edge, while still maintaining an element of elegance. Components of the original building, such as exposed concrete walls and high vaulted brick ceilings, add a sense of drama, while light wooden detailing and tiled floors keep the spaces feeling chic. There are six master suites with views over the cobbled streets, and 11 suites that look over the thriving, shady patio. Located in the Centro Histórico borough of Mexico City, DOWNTOWN is surrounded by countless colonial landmarks. And there is no better place to take in the views of this UNESCO World Heritage site than from the hotel’s vast rooftop terrace, bar and pool, which cover the entire surface of the building’s roof.
