Often referred to as “El otro Mexico”, or the other Mexico, the wine region of Baja California is home to some of the country’s largest and most premium wineries. With its old fishing and mission towns, the region offers an interesting blend of modern and traditional Mexico, a place where cultural and artisanal activity is thriving. As regular visitors to the region, and with a strong affinity for the isolation of the desert, Carlos Couturier and Moisés Micha, owners of Grupo Habita, chose the municipality of Ensenada, in the village of Valle de Guadalupe as the location for Endémico – twenty luxury cabins that blend seamlessly with their stunning natural surroundings. Couturier and Micha are avidly committed to investing in the regions in which they build their hotels, on an environmental, social, economical and cultural level. For each property they place great emphasis on interacting with locals, “We use a local team every time we build a hotel,” says Couturier, “We read the surroundings and their traditions to integrate the local culture into our project.”

The cabins were created by Gracia Studio, a firm with a passion for creating economical architecture, with a particular interest in using modular and flexible buildings. Dotted along a hill overlooking the valley, interspersed by natural boulders, the eco-friendly cabins are raised off the ground to minimize their impact on the landscape. Constructed from Corten steel and wood, they are designed to intentionally weather over time, eventually blending seamlessly with the hills on which they are staggered. Each cabin is furnished minimally with simple yet sleek furnishings, featuring a king size bed, wireless Internet, and a private terrace with a clay kiva. Also concealed among the rocky slope is a pool, restaurant and bar, which all have views out over the seemingly infinite valley.

Couturier and Micha say they hope staying at the hotel is more than just a holiday, but a truly unique experience: “Our mission is to impose a certain philosophy on society. We are not here only to create hotels; we are here to make people understand that creativity is good for society. We don’t only build hotels. We build experiences.”
