Luc Zeghers & Associates

Johannesburg’s Ten Bompas maximises design diversity in a small, modern suite-only hotel. Project architect Luc Zeghers and Associates created an overall atmosphere of warmth and tranquillity in public spaces – whereas the suites sparkle in a glorious marriage of ethnic and Edwardian.

The lobby and meeting rooms at Ten Bompas feature gracefully curved lines and neutral colours set off by deep-hued cotton prints covering custom furniture, as well as strategically placed African objets d’art. This peaceful yet lively space for business or pleasure leads onto outdoor patios, garden and pool, belying its location in the heart of Johannesburg’s business district Sandton.

Each suite has been assigned to a different designer following a brief by proprietor Christoff van Staden to provide natural light and outdoor access as well as a fireplace. Fulfilling van Staden’s directive to create a "home away from home in Africa", the accomplished designer Gill Butler created an Edwardian suite with sand-hued walls and strongly coloured furnishings embossed with leather, combined with tile and steel for a full combination of comfort and modernity.

Other suites blur cultures with military-style canvas and splashes of colour typical of the South African landscape. The ethno-African highlights in couturier Andre Croucamp’s silk-enhanced suite provides a different slant than the "ethnic turned high-tech" approach taken in the suite designed by the architects, Zeghers & Associates.
