According to Mehraz Ehsani, the Iranian-born architect behind the Tribe Hotel, a resort’s functional requirements often dictate regularity and uniformity, resulting in bland, uninspiring buildings. He told Design Hotels™: ‘At Tribe it has been rewarding to be able to break away from imposed restrictions and create welcoming, yet exciting architecture. The layering of elements, interconnection of spaces, use of earthly and tactile materials as well as the inclusion of artifacts from Africa bring about areas and spaces which provide comfort as well as stimulation.’
He added: ‘It’s hard not to be inspired by Africa, in particular by the effect of light and space, and the positive effect they have on people who live here. Both elements were fundamental in the design approach, creating public spaces that feel warm, comfortable and intimate while maintaining the impressive scale of the building.’
